The SEAoNY Education Foundation* ( managed by the Scholarship Committee and 9/11 Memorial Committee) is a 501(c) 3. It was established with the goal of encouraging young people to enter the structural engineering profession by supporting area college and university students studying structural engineering. Since then, we have been able to expand our goals thanks to industry generosity. We also award scholarships to graduating high school students from the Urban Assembly School for Design and Construction and support the Center for Architecture Foundation. In 2021 the Foundation expanded it's vision and goals to bring knowledge and education of the Structural Engineering industry to the general public. We hope to partner with museums and educational institutions to help put our industry, front of mind.
In honor of the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001, SEAoNY is pleased to announce a partnership with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Following the collapse of the World Trade Center, structural engineers and other design professionals were called upon to help maintain the stability of remaining structures and allow for the safe movement of debris. After the initial effort, we continued to provide our services in the clean-up and investigation of the disaster as well as many other affected buildings south of Canal Street. As a 20th anniversary partner, SEAoNY will seek to build upon its direct connection to this important history and strengthen the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s key programming in areas related to our profession.
SEAoNY Education Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is seeking contributions for a $250,000 donation to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum with the purpose of providing our expert knowledge, collective memory, artifacts and resources in recognition of this milestone anniversary. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 health crisis, these funds will also make an immediate impact on the financial needs of the organization.
SEAoNY will honor all contributors on our website and in our Cross Sections newsletter. Additionally, we will collectively be recognized permanently on the Museum’s donor walls as well as other key moments this year.

Four annual scholarships are awarded to two graduating high school senior from the Urban Assembly School in New York, NY and two college students currently enrolled in a structural engineering program in the New York/ New Jersey area. The scholarships are funded from the proceeds of a golf outing fundraiser. The fundraiser is organized by a committee of SEAoNY volunteers. The scholarship and the golf outing fundraiser is an annual event. The scholarships are usually presented to the students at the annual meeting and the golf outing. The college students are chosen based on the choice of the Honorary Member, or the board, if no Honorary Member is named. The student was chosen by faculty at the designated school.
For 2019-2020 proceeds from the golf outing provided scholarships for students who are chosen by that year’s Honorary SEAoNY Member, or the board, if no Honorary Member was named. This past year, scholarships were awarded to Kamil Pisula from City College and Carol Shlyakhova from NYU of $5,000 each.
