For the year beginning September 1, 2010, Kevin Poulin will become President of SEAoNY. Deborah McGuiness was appointed by the board to continue as Secretary. Cristobal Correa and Joe Savalli will continue to serve their second year as Directors. Chris Cerino has completed his term as President and will continue as Past-President. Benjamin Wisniewski has completed his term as Treasurer. Deborah McGuinness, Karl J. Rubenacker and Constadino Sirakis have completed their terms as Directors. SEAoNY thanks all of them for their hard work and dedication to the success of our organization.

02.20.10: ATC-20_Set Procedures for Post-earthquake Safety Evaluation of Buildings
The Association of Haitian American Engineers of NY (ADIHA), in association with Engineers without Borders (EWB) and Applied Technology Council (ATC), are sponsoring a training session on Saturday, February 20, 2010 for post-earthquake building damage as well as bridge structure and pipeline assessments. We invite all Engineers, Architects, Construction Managers and studentsin these fields to attend the class.

architectural pavilion for the 2010 summer season on Governors Island,
the City of Dreams Pavilion. The registration deadline is February 8, and
the deadline for entries is February 16.

Our National Organization (NCSEA) has been in communication with the US State Department regarding the Haiti relief effort. NCSEA will let the individual Member Organizations know when they are ready for our help. In the interim, monetary donations to the American Red Cross or other reputable organizations are encouraged.

The Forensic Engineering Committee is currently accepting submissions of abstracts for papers to be included in its upcoming Forensic Engineering Symposium, which will be held on four evenings in June 2010 at Cooper Union in New York City. The topic of the Symposium is “Sources of Errors and Opportunities for Catching Them” and the deadline for submissions is on January 16, 2010.

On Thursday, November 6, 2008, The Ornamental Metal Institute of New York will present “Façade Attachments to Steel Framed Buildings,” an AISC seminar based on the newly published AISC Design Guide 22: Façade Attachments to Steel-Framed Buildings, a guide that explains façade system fundamentals and, using practical examples, highlights the performance issues that impact attachment design.
11.06.08: Webinar: Foundation Design Using IBC Chapter 18
In the 2009 International Building Code (IBC), Chapter 18 (Soils and Foundations) has been rewritten in its entirety. There are a few important technical changes, but most of the rewrite focuses on eliminating conflict, improving clarity, and coordinating better with current resource documents, nomenclature, and construction practices. This seminar will address the geotechnical investigation, structural analysis, design, detailing, and special inspection requirements for foundations as defined in Chapter 18 (and related sections) of the 2009 IBC.
10.27.08: ICC/NCSEA Webinars
Calculating structural loads can be challenging. A series of webinars presented by the International Code Council and the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations will show you how to accurately calculate structural loads in accordance with the latest building codes.
The webinars are taught by one of the structural engineering community's most prominent instructors, David Fanella, Ph.D., S.E.

Proposed legislation has been introduced that would eliminate the requirement that the New York City Department of Buildings Commissioner be a professional engineer (PE) or a registered architect (RA). The bill is scheduled for a committee hearing on Wednesday May 7, 2008 at 1 pm in City Hall, so time is running out to make yourself heard.

11.29.07: ATC Questionnaire on Emerging Structural Issues
The ATC Board of Directors and Executive Staff are now seeking input from the structural engineering profession on a variety of emerging issues that will affect ATC’s programmatic decisions over the coming months and years. Their goal is to develop and implement programs that have lasting value to the structural engineering profession. To assist in this process they have developed a questionnaire designed to obtain perspectives on emerging issues in structural engineering from leaders in the profession.

Effective October 31, 2007, the New York City Building Department has enacted a change to the TR-1 Technical Responsibility permit filing process to eliminate what is commonly termed “dummy signing” for future Controlled Inspections.

09.06.07: SEAoNY Membership 2007-2008
Dear SEAoNY Members,
We appreciate your continued support as we grow into a larger, busier and more professional association. For the 2007-2008 fiscal year, we needed to adjust the membership dues to $150 for licensed professionals and $75 for associate members. This necessary increase will allow us to subsidize much needed administrative help, offset increased event venue and vendor costs, continue to provide high quality seminars and PDH credits for a reasonable fee, and pursue other areas of growth. We appreciate your understanding and continued support.

NCSEA has announced the tenth annual Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards Program. This program annually highlights some of the best examples of structural engineering ingenuity throughout the world. Structural engineers and structural engineering firms are encuraged to enter this year's program. Projects will be judged on innovative design, engineering achievement and creativity.
